ThePowerMBA — Changing the Game of Business Learning

I have just finished studying my bachelors degree at university in Economics and Management and to say that I learnt a lot is an understatement. I love learning and I always have, but I can’t help but ponder that perhaps the university structure that I went through wasn’t geared well towards the learning element that is by definition fundamental to university.

Why do I say this?

Well, I know for a fact that many decide which modules to take at university not by their personal passion and willingness to learn about that subject, but more because the chance of achieving a high grade is far more likely. This really annoys me because it undermines the whole education structure.

As I was exploring the next steps for me from an education stand point, I want to get an MBA but I can’t right now.

Most business schools require you to have work experience of at least 3 years before they even consider you and even then the fees can be extortionately high — in the tens of thousands a year! A year at Harvard Business School costs a massive $73,000!

Not to mention, I hate exams. I always have. The stress, the anxiety, the sleepless nights memorising key points and facts to include in a question that may or may not even appear in the exam.

Plus, many universities including my own were making strides into making the most of virtual learning and online resources but many would argue that this wasn’t enough and a large proportion of the lectures may not have been recorded due to technical difficulties, the lecturer forgetting or the lecturer writing physically on the black board which is not recorded.

So for someone like me where I had a lot of other commitments while at university including sport and society commitments, I was forced to miss the odd lecture and once missed, you wouldn’t be able to recover fully.

They need to be more flexible.

The Business School that looks like it’s shaking up the industry

ThePowerMBA is launching in the UK, alongside the USA, Canada, Germany and Israel.

According to them:

A practical and up-to-date online program, with 250+ (15 min) classes and local communities all around the world, open to anybody that wants to thrive in business.

I must admit, I have seen many virtual online business orientated courses out there but ThePowerMBA really stood out to me because they only launched in 2018 in Spain and have grown tremendously since, launching worldwide to Latin America and now others.

It looks like they must be doing something right to grow this much and I am willing to give them a go!

As I researched further, I realised ThePowerMBA has an extremely honest approach, which I admire and I haven’t really found with other platforms. They are not accredited and they say this is because they want to deliver modules in the newest and cutting edge of business. It’s a trade-off I guess, but I know for me, I want to learn about the new and emerging disciplines and if I have to wait until that part of the module becomes part of the accreditation, it might already be outdated.

Modules like Digital Marketing, Disruptive Tech in Business and not only that but the learning will come from business leaders of today from companies that I use on a daily basis:

  • Eric Ries (author, The Lean Startup,)
  • Uri Levine (co-founder, Waze)
  • Martin Eberhard (Co-founder, Tesla)
  • Marc Randolph (co-founder, Netflix)

Look at that incredible line up!

And above all, I can enrol on it now — I don’t have to wait until I gain 3 years experience and then apply to a business school, but I am actually starting today with no debt either.

And, no exams! If you, like me, don’t feel like exams are the best way to evaluate understanding and feel like exams distract you from learning about things you are actually passionate about, ThePowerMBA is good for you.

What’s next?

I am really looking forward to starting this journey to learn about things I am passionate about from the key business leaders of today, who represent and have created businesses that I personally interact with every day.

My life goals have always been around creating new things and being an entrepreneur in whatever capacity that might entail; either in a corporate capacity or launching my own business.

So, I am always looking to learn as much as possible from the people I meet, my friends and family, my experiences and failures and now, ThePowerMBA to become a more skilled entrepreneur and business leader.

The skills you need to get there are so varied such as empathy and data analytics and so learning from different sources I feel is key to personal development.

So I think ThePowerMBA will fit into my life nicely, complimenting my already learning-orientated lifestyle and choices to push myself.

As time goes by, I will update you guys on what I am learning and how I am using this in my day to day life and I can’t wait to update you guys on the lessons I have learnt. I’m going to do this over blog, so be sure to subscribe and also on my podcast, The Millennial Entrepreneur .

Have a great week and looking forward to learning with all of you!
